The Type 97 Heike got its start with the deep-sea mining vehicles on the colony world of Ebisu. Its powerful plasma claws originally were used for breaking into hardened chunks of ore. Seeing potential in the chassis, the Imperial Navy commissioned a military variant. The resulting vehicle was upgraded with a turret and additional armor before making its debut in the Joseon-Japanese War in 1937. The Heike has proven itself a valuable asset for the Navy both for offense and defense.
